monday's must-haves: london calling

October 21, 2014 by Bonkosi Horn

countdown to our belated honeymoon trip to london: 4 days. it'll be my mister's first time out of the country and i'm so excited to experience his first (of many, i know) trips abroad with him.

i mentioned that i'm not one to step out of my comfort zone. when it comes to traveling, though, it's a completely different story. the experience, the people, the culture, the sights. i become an adventurer. i spent 5 months of my college experience in spain, with a host family who spoke maybe 5 words of english. maybe. i wholeheartedly embraced the differences that became my daily routine. i loved the adventure of navigating the city, making my way through new territories, discovering that i spoke spanish well enough to survive (pat on the back for me.) traveling and seeing the world does something to me very little can - a light, a spark, an excitement like a kid in a candy shop.

i'm excited to share my love of world travel with the love of my life. but first, preparation, right? i'm committing to very little shopping while abroad. i want to experience london (and a little bit of paris, too!) like really, truly experience london, knowing that i'm experiencing something new with my mister that londoners are proud of.

last week, i met a london 'millennial' (yes, i said it!) if not by coincidence, i'm not sure what. he gave me his curated tour of london and i listened and took notes like i was going to get tested on it. this is the london i want to see - the london you see only through the eyes of a youngish local, proud-of-his-hometown-excited-to-share-his-love-for-london kind of tour.

on this list of must-sees/must-dos:

  • regent's park

    • primrose hill has the best view of all of london

    • independent shops, cool cafes, good food

  • soho/carnaby street

    • liberty of london (absolutely. have you not seen these collaborations?!)

    • food: wright brothers for seafood, roka for sushi + a scene, early evening drinks and a night on the town at the box.

  • south bank area

    • tate modern museum

  • must eat:

    • mildred's for vegetarian

    • duke of wellington for the best fish & chips in all of london

  • tourist(y) areas to see:

    • shoreditch - spitalfields market

    • brick lane (but whatever we do, do NOT eat here...it's "slop")

any must-haves i'm missing?
